The Spring of Chang'an: A Unique Chinese New Year Gift Box

Design Inspired by Tang Dynasty Culture

The Spring of Chang'an is a Chinese New Year gift box designed by Chen Yao, Chen Xinjie, and Li Wangguan. Inspired by the rich historical and cultural heritage of Xi'an, known as Chang'an in ancient times, this gift box aims to revive the New Year customs of the Tang Dynasty.

This gift box stands out from others with its unique theme and design. Unlike traditional New Year gift boxes, The Spring of Chang'an pays homage to the Tang Dynasty culture. The designers carefully selected four Tang cultural relics from the Xi'an museum and incorporated elements such as flowers, birds, butterflies, and fish to symbolize the vigor and vitality of spring. The color palette of the gift box draws inspiration from the painting colors of the Tang Dynasty, adding an authentic touch to the design.

The materials used in The Spring of Chang'an reflect those commonly used during the Tang Dynasty. The contents of the gift box are made of paper, mahogany, and cloth, mirroring the materials used in that era. This attention to detail adds to the authenticity and uniqueness of the design.

The Spring of Chang'an measures 145mmx145mmx325mm, making it a substantial and visually striking gift box. Its size and design make it a perfect gift for the Chinese New Year, symbolizing the arrival of spring and new beginnings.

The design team behind The Spring of Chang'an consisted of Chen Yao as the project manager, Chen Xinjie as the designer, and Li Wangguan as the creative director. Their collaboration and expertise brought this innovative gift box to life.

The project commenced in August 2018 and was completed in January 2019 in Xi'an. Before the Spring Festival, over 6,000 gift boxes had already been sold, showcasing the popularity and appeal of this unique design.

Prior to starting the design process, the team conducted extensive research on the folk customs of the Tang Dynasty. They delved into books and studied the daily necessities of that era in the museum, selecting patterns with auspicious meanings. To ensure accuracy, the design elements were confirmed with cultural experts of the Tang Dynasty.

One of the main challenges faced by the design team was presenting the folk customs of the Tang Dynasty, which are unfamiliar to modern people. Through their design, they aimed to evoke the beauty of these customs and inspire a deeper understanding and appreciation.

The Spring of Chang'an is copyrighted by Rujian, 2019, ensuring the protection of its intellectual property. This design has also received recognition and acclaim, winning the Iron A' Design Award in 2019 in the Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design category. This award is bestowed upon well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements, contributing to a better world.
